Learners at Thembelihle High School see the awesome sight of solar activity for the first time
Geraldine Hogan and her late husband David Lunt have changed the world of amateur astronomy by developing technology which allows the observation of our nearest star – the Sun.
In 1965 David began developing filters and optical instruments for NASA and the professional astronomy market. In 1997, David founded Coronado Instrument Group in Arizona, USA and in 2001, David, along with Geraldine Hogan, formed Coronado Technology Group, LLC. Coronado is now a part one of the leading telescope manufacturer in the world, Meade.
Geraldine has fond memories of going to college in Norfolk,UK. She has personally donated two of Coronado’s Personal Solar telescopes ( known as PSTs) to the North and South project to be lent to South African Schools. They were a huge hit with learners during the visit of the Science Ambassadors. The design of the scope and mount proved very easy to use compared to other hydrogen alpha setups.
This donation is made in memory of David.
