Bernhard Fleck

As a child in Germany my main interests were sports and music. I started fencing at age 4 and became the German junior champion seven times. I started playing the piano when I was 4 and still play piano today. My favourite composer is J S Bach. The structure of his music is very mathematical. My favourite subjects at school were physics and math. By 17 I was pretty sure that I wanted to be a physicist.

Working on this challenge with SOS teacher Graham Colman

 As a solar physicist my main discovery has been why different layers of the Sun pulse at different rates.   But as ESA lead scientist of the SOHO mission my  job now is to help other scientists use the spacecraft to make more discoveries.   I really get a kick out of seeing their work and SOHO pictures making appearances in magazines and movies.   You can even see a SOHO image in Spiderman 2!
