Massimo Robberto

My job is 50% research and 50% functional; helping other people use the telescope.   Mostly I work on the Orion Nebula, particularly at the infra-red end of the spectrum which is my speciality.  I grew up in the days of Apollo and going to the moon.  I remember a priest, who was a professor of physics, showing me the planets and stars through his 20cm Newtonian telescope.   It was amazing and I thought “I want that”.

When I was 15 I got a 6cm refractor telescope.  At school I wasn’t particularly special at maths or physics.  It took me a while to be descent student, so that shows that there is hope for everybody!  After doing my first degree I spent 10 years living in Italy and 4 in Germany before coming to work for ESA 6 years ago.  I have a wife and a 2 year old child and when I’m not working or looking after my family I like to read or go walking.
