Frank Summers

Hi, my name is Frank Summers, I’m an outreach and visualization astrophysicist at the Space Telescope Science Institute.  I’m American and the story of how I came to work at the STScI is rather different from most peoples as I have a 20 year background in dance.  In high school I was voted best actor.  I like all kinds of dance including tap and ballroom dancing, I was a director and choreographer of dance productions whilst at Berkeley college and Princeton before I then went on to work on IMAX productions.  I helped to design the Hayden Planetarium in New York City where I was also a lead scientist for exhibits.

I have worked at the STScI since 2001.  At school I was good at maths and have always enjoyed solving problems, especially those involving physics.  It was because of this that I became interested in astronomy.  I have 2 children, one aged 3 and one aged 8.  In my spare time I still enjoy ballroom dancing, I like to see films, not just movies but good quality films.  I also like to go wine tasting whenever I’m in California.
