Bringing Cutting Edge Science into the Classroom
A Science Learning Centre East of England  in-service training course for teachers

Participants will receive a fantastic, stimulating day PLUS FREE resources to take away.

Take a journey through time in the company of astrophysicists and an experienced teacher to explore some of the latest research in a range of astronomy and physics topics. These will include the Big Bang, formation of the elements (atomic and nuclear physics), electromagnetic radiation, radioactivity, energy transfers and more! The day will include ample opportunity for hands-on experience of exciting practical techniques in order to illustrate how scientists investigate these key concepts. You will complete the Journey inspired, updated and re-energised, with a pack of activities that are readily transferable to the classroom. The plenary session will include discussion of follow-up opportunities to enable you to make full use of the techniques and ideas encountered.

The Earth and Beyond

A Science Learning Centre East of England  in-service training course for teachers

Course Lead by: Mike Cripps (Neatherd  High School) in collaboration with the University of Hertfordshire Astronomy Department and the Science Learning Centre East of England staff


This hands-on course, led by  a practicing teacher, will give you resources, practical techniques and subject knowledge to enhance your teaching of the 'The Earth and Beyond' sections of the National Curriculum.  It will enable you and your class to explore the universe using  multi media resources, low cost instruments, telescopes and planetariums . The course includes training in the use of a mobile planetarium and telescopes (including solar telescopes) plus ICT resources including the Hubble and Faulkes telescopes which can be used in your school.

You will have the opportunity to hire the portable planetarium and telescopes for use in your school. Follow up sessions will be arranged at observatories in your region.

Teachers of KS2, 3 and 4 science

Teachers of AS Science for Public Understanding

Teachers and other individuals, running or wishing to set up extracurricular science clubs
